Alternative drives are prevailing

Since 1910, the internal combustion engine has prevailed. A hundred years later, the internal combustion engine in cars is being replaced by alternative drives. The question is not whether, but how quickly. “Self-motion” will also reach new dimensions with the connectivity of vehicles and the resulting (partially) autonomous driving.

Conclusion: the car industry is undergoing fundamental change. Various technical innovations, in particular alternative drives, the connectivity of vehicles and autonomous driving, pose new challenges for rescue personnel.

The internal combustion engine remains a core element of the car industry, and will continue to be so in the coming years. But on a different level. Manufacturers expect 30% internal combustion engines, 30% electric and 40% hybrid drives by 2025. Hydrogen drives count as electrified and the gas drives as combustion engines. The proportion of electrified drives will therefore be significantly higher. The variety of drives increases with gas drives, hydrogen and CNG/LPG. With the reactivity of hydrogen and escaping gases, there are known but also new risks to consider.

With increasing connectivity, vehicles will drive partly autonomously. Automatic parking, driving in convoy, emergency braking systems, etc. have become the norm. With these technologies, the requirements for occupant protection and the protection of other road users increase. This in turn significantly changes the elements of passive safety such as airbags. More and more pyrotechnic triggers are being installed and in the last three years we have also seen external airbags. They have a volume many times greater than internal airbags. This targeted effect on the outside to protect pedestrians and cyclists can endanger rescue personnel.


CO2 emissions regulations are forcing manufacturers to switch to alternative drives. Hybrid and electric vehicles are often adopted as a temporary solution. The hydrogen drive will replace these vehicles in the near future. It is forgotten that the fuel cell releases the electricity it generates into a high-voltage battery, which drives an electric machine. With current technology, a hydrogen drive is a high-voltage drive. Manufacturers tried to outdo each other in the autumn/spring of 2019/2020 with announcements of new drives. As an example the goals set by German manufacturers for the next few years.


The above mentioned developments pose increasingly more difficult tasks for rescue workers. Proven standard measures can sometimes no longer ensure self-protection. Securing alternative drives differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and sometimes from model to model, as there is no standard protocol. The CRS database provides a solution to the wide range of tasks involved in deactivating/securing the new systems. It contains the necessary deactivation measures for all vehicles on the market. The monthly updates of cars/vans, trucks and buses include around two dozen new vehicles. So keep an eye on the monthly updates. In 2020, Moditech will add at least the following vehicles:

Cities, municipalities and major distributors are increasingly buying municipal vehicles with alternative drives. Over the coming months, we will integrate municipal vehicles with alternative drives into the CRS database. We expect to add new models from this category to our database in March.
