Improved license plate number query with Vehicle Identification Service (VIS)
Before first responders can consult the information that will enable them to safely and quickly free a victim trapped in a crashed vehicle, it must first be determined which CRS rescue sheet belongs to the vehicle. The quickest and most efficient way to select the right CRS rescue sheet from the extensive CRS database is to use the license plate number.
Moditech allows CRS users in several countries to request the CRS rescue sheet using the license plate number. This license plate number is entered by the user into the CRS and then sent in real time to the Vehicle Identification Service (VIS). The VIS is a web service in the Cloud and is connected with vehicle registration authorities/providers in various countries. The license plate number is forwarded to the proper provider, after which the vehicle’s technical registration data is returned. Using this information, which is more or less complete for each country and provided differently, the VIS then searches for a match in the CRS database.
Ideally, that results in one search result but in some cases, a query delivers more search results than desired. The quality of the information in the registers is the determining factor here, and it is not permitted in all countries to use the chassis number to retrieve the correct data due to privacy laws.
Since the beginning of 2022, we have been gradually replacing the existing Vehicle Matching Service (VRS) with a new service: the Vehicle Identification Service (VIS). This new service is fully optimised and uses the latest technology. In particular, the scalability and availability have been improved significantly. Furthermore, compared to the old service, the VIS matches data based on more technical parameters, allowing for a more accurate match. The first results also demonstrate this: in many cases, a single result is now displayed so that the correct CRS rescue sheet of the corresponding vehicle can be opened immediately.
The VIS is now in production for various vehicle categories in the Netherlands and Germany. The quality of search results is continuously monitored so that the service can be further optimised. Other countries will be added to the new service in the coming months. The VIS is expected to be in full production from the 4th quarter.
